Domain Names
Domain Names
Domain names are human-readable addresses that are input by the user into a browser to reach a website, (for example, google.com). Domain names are found inside URLs:
https:/ /ben.gctlevel.uk
- Protocol
- Subdomain
- Second-level Domain
- Top-level Domain
Domain names are linked to the website’s IP (Internet Protocol) address. This IP is stored on a DNS server which is accessed by your machine when you input a domain name into a browser. If the IP is not found, the computer moves on to the next DNS server until the address is found. This information is then returned to the browser which pulls the website’s content from the hosting server.
Analogy
Domain names are like street addresses for websites. Just as a street address helps you find a specific house or building in a city, a domain name helps you locate a particular website on the vast landscape of the internet. It's a user-friendly way to navigate the digital world, providing a recognizable and easy-to-remember name that leads you to a specific online destination.
