One offence under the CMA of 1990 was that is criminalised unauthorised access to a computer system and its data. This criminalised a hacker accessing the data altogether. Another offence was outlined as damaging or destroying data held on a computer system. This made sure that hackers who successfully tampered with data were given a harsher sentence as they had done something with the data they had retrieved.
What is the penalty for a breach of section 3ZA?
Section 3ZA makes it illegal to perform an authorised act, or creating the risk of, serious damage of a material kind. If this damage causes risk to human welfare or national security the maximum sentence is life in prison. Else, the maximum sentence is 14 years in prison.

One type of hacking is black hat hacking. This is where the hacker is breaching the Computer Misuse Act and committing cybercrime with malicious intent. These hackers are illegal and often hack businesses for financial/status gain. They can also be hacking for revenge, political reasons, terror related reason and funded by a third-party source.
