Denial of service attacks

 Denial of service attacks

What is a DoS attack?

A denial of service (DoS) attack is when a hacker floods network infrastructure with illegitimate packets of data. This causes the device to be bombarded with fake traffic and prevents legitimate traffic getting through therefore causing the network to slow down or cease action. These attacks are usually focused on websites, emails, and online accounts. A DoS attacks uses one malicious device sending packets to the victim.

What is a DDoS attack?

A distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack works in the same way as a DoS attack however, the malicious packets are sent from various devices rather than one. Usually, this is done using a botnet which is a collection of infected devices that pool together their resources to attack networks and infrastructure.
