What is Active Directory?
Active directory (AD) is a service developed by Microsoft to store information about network resources. Active directory stores information such as user credentials, user permissions, authentication and group policies.
Features of Active Directory:
- SSO (single sign on) - This allows users to log in once with their credentials and access other network resources without having to sign in again.
- User and group management – This allows network administrators to set management policies which regulate user’s access to network resources.
- Security – It provides various security features such as encryption, authentication and access control.
- Directory replication – Uses a distributed architecture to replicate directory information using multiple domain controllers.
- Group policy – Network administrators can add users to groups in order to control network access rights.
