OSA Summer 2023 Mock - Task 1, Assignment 2

 OSA Summer 2023 Mock – Task 1, Assignment 2

Equipment needed

Pictured is the equipment needed to create a Cat5e ethernet cable. The equipment includes:

  • Cable crimper/stripper tool

  • 1m of Cat5 ethernet cable

  • 2 RJ45 connectors

  • Modular cable tester

Strip the end from the cable

Use the cable stripper to strip ½ a finger’s length from the end of the cable. This will expose the wires from the cable’s casing.

Locate cable center

Bend the wires inside to reveal the center of the cable. It should be an obvious plastic column that runs down the cable.

Cut cable center

Use the cutting tool to cut the middle plastic center. Be careful not to cut any of the exposed wires.

Split wires apart

Twist the wires until they are all separated from each other.

Order the wires

Order the wires in this configuration for T-568B:

  • White/orange

  • Orange

  • White/green

  • Blue

  • White/blue

  • Green

  • White/brown

  • Brown

Insert the wires into the RJ45 connector

Insert the wires into the RJ45 connector. Make sure the wires go all the way to the end of the connector and don’t fall out.

Load the cable into the crimping tool

Insert the RJ45 connector with the wires installed into the cable crimping tool.

Crimp the cable by pressing down on the crimping tool handles. This will ensure the cables are pressed down and don’t fall out when the crimping tool is released. You may want to crimp the cable multiple times to ensure that all the wires are crimped down.

The final result should look like this.

Repeat the process for the other end

Once the process has been completed on the other end, the cable should look like this.

Testing the cable

Insert the cable into the cable tester and switch all the switches. If the cable is configured correctly, all the lights should illuminate. If all the lights don’t illuminate, there may be a problem with the wire configurations or the crimping of the cable.
