 OSA Assignment 1 – Task 1 Guide 

 

Exam parameters 

    • Time length – 3 hours 
    • Marks available – 20 

 

Task 1: Planning 

In this task you are required to submit: 

    • A project plan 
    • Gantt chart showing the critical path 
    • Explanation of legal requirements 
    • Physical and digital threat countermeasures 
    • Annotated floor plan 

 

Gantt Chart 

The Gantt Chart is the first document you should create. This details each phase of the project alongside the timescale to complete it. 

Ensure you make a note of the deadline for the project along with any pre-requisites such as cabling. This should all be implemented into your Gantt Chart. 

You can follow a layout like this: 

  • Project: 

    • Pre considerations (Gathering project timescale, risk assessments, ...) 
    • Planning (Devising project plan, identifying budget, ...) 
    • Design (Research hardware, identify topology, ...) 
    • Pre install (Create network simulation, pre-download software, ...) 

  • Installation: 

    • Phase 1 (Install switches, install WAPs, ...) 
    • Phase 2 (Install servers, configure servers, ...) 
    • Testing (Conduct load test, test wireless network, ...) 
    • Evaluate (Review test results, survey user acceptance, ...) 

 

After creating the Gantt Chart, you should display the critical path. This will be automatically calculated if using software such as Microsoft Project. 

 

Project Plan 

The project plan must detail how the equipment will be installed (where and why). It should also outline risk mitigation measures and security. Using headings such as these may be beneficial: 

    • Legal requirements (Work at height regulations, DSE, ...) 
    • Data protection (DPA, encryption, ...) 
    • Physical security measures (Natural disasters, temperature regulation, ...) 
    • Digital security measures (Malware, network hardening, ...) 
    • Changes to the building (CCTV, gas suppression, ...) 

 

Building Plan 

This step is where you create an annotated floor plan. The floor plan should be annotated with CCTV positions, door locks, gas suppression systems, UPS batteries, etc... 

Ensure you create a key to inform readers about what the annotations are.
