 Gloucestershire County Council

Gloucestershire County Council is the local government body for the Gloucestershire region. They deal with services such as health, education, transport, business, finance, local democracy, etc...

Organisational structure

County council businesses are governmentally owned which means they operate in the public sector. Councils are made up of one chief executive who oversees most council decisions. Below them is the board of directors. These operatives are specialised to specific areas of the council such as transport, education, etc... Counsellors are also involved in the business. They debate and advise on different points that are raised during meetings.

Stakeholders

Gloucestershire County Council has a few notable stakeholders:

    • Environmental agency
    • Parish councils
    • Highway maintenance
    • EMS
    • UK government

These stakeholders play an important role in the management of the county. The government has a lot of input into the council as they are the main source of finance.

Data

Gloucestershire County Council must deal with large amounts of data. Some of this includes:

    • Census data
    • Housing information
    • Health records
    • Planning applications
    • Benefit payments

In 2021, Gloucestershire County Council was affected by a huge scale cyber attack which disrupted thousands of vital services. The council’s servers were compromised by Russian hackers which took down lots of needed services for thousands of people. The council had to rebuild all their servers off tax-payer's money. However, this isn’t the only attack that Gloucestershire County Council faced.

In 2014, the council was targeted by the international cyber group “Anonymous” who stole over 30,000 emails containing personal and financial information. The council was fined £100,000 for mishandling personal data.
