Mobile device/application management (MDM/MAM)
Mobile device/application management
What is mobile device management (MDM)?
Mobile device management (MDM) is a service that allows an organisation to remotely control mobile devices. The devices are often managed to enforce policies and harden security on the device.
What is mobile application management (MAM)?
Mobile application management (MAM) is a service that allows an organisation to remotely manage applications on a mobile device. This is usually used on personal devices where employees are still using them for work. Policies still need to be enforced, however because it is a personal device, the company cannot remotely manage the whole device.
Why do companies use MDM/MAM?
Companies use mobile management services to enforce policies on devices used for work related purposes, especially with access to sensitive data. By using MDM, the company can monitor activity on the device and flag suspicious access attempts. It also allows for remote data wiping if the mobile device gets lost or stolen. This mitigates the risk of sensitive data being breached, causing the company to violate data protection laws. Unfortunately, due to the nature of personal devices, MDM can’t always be installed without violating the user’s privacy. This is why some organisations prefer to use MAM, where certain applications (usually applications used for work purposes) can be remotely managed by the system administrator. For example, these apps can be locked remotely if the device gets stolen, mitigating the risk of a data breach.
MDM/MAM for mobile security
Mobile management can offer security benefits for companies. For example, devices can be monitored for suspicious activity such as unauthorised login attempts, failed credential flags and password changes. These events can be identified and investigated to mitigate the risk of a successful cyber-attack against the device. By managing downloads and attachments in emails, the risk of mobile malware infection can be decreased.
