Project Practice - Business Context
Project practice – Business context
The task:
A retail company selling pet food and other pet supplies is planning to implement an online e-commerce site and market its products using social media. They have a large warehouse and office space on one site. You have been asked to help them plan for the change and to provide them with advice and guidance on how they should proceed. Prepare a report for the business owner providing advice and guidance.
Measurable value of digitalisation to the business
By creating an e-commerce site, the measurable value of digitalisation in the business will be greatly increased. Sales and marketing will be dealing with online data analysis tools to analyse and visualise the sales and data from the online store. This will make it easier to work with and gain knowledge from. Operations will also be more efficient as it is easier and quicker to change an online store rather than a real one. Financing will be advantaged as well as there is now one global source of income making it easier to account for. The business’ KPIs will also increase due to almost every sector benefitting from the online store.
Influence of digitalisation
The brand differentiation of the business will be recognised as they can grow as their own USP and become more recognisable with an online store. Digital innovations can also be used such as AI to create a better and more friendly customer experience online. The business will gain a wider access to customers with e-commerce as anyone can access the store without having to physically go to a physical shop. Marketing will become easier as digital personalisation can be used to target specific groups with customised adverts most compelling to them. Platform interoperability will not be an issue with a website as anyone with an internet connection can access it. This also relates to an open standard where no one is blocked from accessing the website.
Role of technical change management
The introduction of digital data will greatly improve change management. Operations will be able to work more efficiently as they can be given accurate data to suggest and apply changes in the business. Planning change will also be easier on a digital level as data is more accessible and relevant.
Components of technical change management
A request for change can be accepted easier as the business can have a SMARTER target to work towards. The risks and impacts are reduced as the data used will be more accurate and precise. Rollback planning is easier because it is easier to rollback a website than a physical change. Traceability will be quicker as the website will show changes in trends and data relating to a change and documentation can be done when that happens.
Factors that will drive the change
Sometimes the technology will change which may cause the business to implement changes and improvements. Laws also change such as data protection laws which can cause changes to an online site storing user information. Social integration will reach more people online which will cause change to account for them and the value to end users may also cause changes.
Considerations to customer needs
The website should be easy to use with a clear frontend and well-designed backend development. This makes it as simple for customers to use and buy products online.
Risks and implications within the business environment
The business may have to hire developers to create the website. Also, they may have to invest in off-site hosting services and payment gateway services for the website. Each employee must be given training on how to use digital services and recognise phishing attempts.
Considerations for the implementation of codes of conduct
Businesses must consider BYOD (bring your own device) policies and data protection measures to protect their customer’s data. If they do not do this, they may be at risk of a data breach and liable for the data protection act.
